Quick answer Prices, park fee and the pick

Nairobi National Park tours run from $33 per person for a shared half-day game drive of about 5 hours, and on most listings the $80 KWS park fee is paid on top. Only the two fee-included private listings fold the park fee into the price. Add the Sheldrick orphanage ($20 cash) and the Giraffe Centre (about $15, card only) and the day grows again.

Nairobi National Park Tours Compared

Prices are per person and the from-price is the lowest option on each listing, so a longer or private variant costs more. The platform handles payment and every listing cancels free up to 24 hours before the start. Each card says whether the $80 KWS park fee is inside the price or paid on the day.

Nairobi National Park Tours by Price, Park Fee and Vehicle

The table lines up every listing by listed price, what happens to the $80 KWS park fee, the vehicle and the length. Where Viator adds the park fee (and on some days the orphanage and Giraffe Centre entry) at checkout, the cell shows that figure. Shared van drives sit at the bottom of the price range, private Land Cruisers at the top. Figures current for in Q4 2026.

Shared Half-Day Game Drives

The cheapest way into the park is a shared morning or afternoon drive. Three listings start at $33 per person, and none of them includes the KWS park entry fee.

The Three Drives Side by Side

All three shared half-day drives below are priced per person and all three leave the $80 adult (and $40 child) non-resident park fee outside the listed price, so you pay Kenya Wildlife Service on top. The table compares the listed price, the vehicle, the group size and what you must add on the day, using each listing's own figures.

Half-Day Game Drive$33Open-roof van, jeep optionUp to 15KWS fee bought online before the drive
5-Hour Guided Game Drive$33Jeep / SUV with Wi-FiUp to 20KWS fee $80 adult, $40 child non-resident
5-Hour 4x4 Safari$33Open-roof 4x4 with Wi-FiUp to 15KWS fee $80 adult, $40 child non-resident

How a Half-day Runs

The driver collects you at your hotel early, and the ride to the gate takes about 30 minutes from central Nairobi. You then spend about 4 to 5 hours driving the park tracks in an open-roof vehicle before returning around lunchtime. The 5-Hour 4x4 Safari stops at the Ivory Burning Site, where twelve tons of confiscated ivory were burned in 1989, and offers an optional arts and crafts market stop of about 1 hour. The 5-Hour Guided Game Drive offers an optional Kobe Tough beads and leather stop instead. The Half-Day Game Drive adds about 1 hour of shopping at Maasai Market Collections in Karen, so its time in the park is closer to 4 hours.

What Separates Them

The listed price is identical at $33, so the choice is the vehicle and the group. The Half-Day Game Drive uses an open-roof van with a jeep option and caps the shared group at 15, with guides in English, German, French and Dutch. The 5-Hour Guided Game Drive runs a jeep or SUV with Wi-Fi on board and takes up to 20 people. The 5-Hour 4x4 Safari puts you in an open-roof 4x4 with Wi-Fi and stops at the Ivory Burning Site. Both the Giovanni and Eloquent listings charge $25 extra for pickups from airport-area hotels, so check your pickup zone before you book.

Private 4x4 Tours

A private vehicle means your group only, your own pace and a window seat each. Prices run from $90 to $257 per person, and the park fee is inside the price only on the fee-included listings.

The Private Listings Compared

The table below lines up the private 4x4 listings on the catalog: the listed price, the length, whether the KWS park fee sits inside the price, and the pickup. Every price is per person and comes from the listing itself, so compare the Pickup column with where you are staying before you book.

TourPriceLengthPark feePickup

Private Half-Day Jeep Tour$904-6 hoursViator adds $80 at checkoutHotel or airport pickup, or meet at Wild Coffee

Why the Fee-included Listings Look Dearer

The two dearer prices are not a dearer vehicle. The Private Land Cruiser, Fee Included at $257 and the Private Half Day, All Fees In at $194.81 put the KWS entry fee inside their sticker price, so the figure you see is close to what you pay. The other three list lower because the park fee is added on: add $80 per adult to the Private 4x4 Land Cruiser Tour, the Private Park and Orphanage Drive and the Private Half-Day Jeep Tour before you compare. The jeep tour adds the $80 at checkout and the guide helps you buy the ticket at the gate by card or M-Pesa. The orphanage drive also adds the Sheldrick $20 per adult on the day.

Who a Private Vehicle Suits

Photographers get to hold the vehicle at a sighting without five other passengers leaning over the roof. Families avoid mixing with a shared group, and everyone gets a window seat in an open-roof Land Cruiser. You also set the start time: the KWS gates open at 6:00 AM and an early entry is the best chance at active wildlife before the heat of the day. The Private 4x4 Land Cruiser Tour, rated 4.9 from 73 reviews, runs 5 to 6 hours of private driving and can add the Giraffe Centre with free transport, though you pay your own entry there. The Private Half Day, All Fees In lists the black rhino as the main target of its drive.

Adding the Elephant Orphanage and the Giraffe Centre

Nairobi National Park has four of the Big Five and no elephants. The elephants of the day are the orphans at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust nursery, so several tours pair the game drive with the orphanage and the Giraffe Centre in one morning.

The Combo Tours Compared

Five listings combine the park with the Sheldrick orphanage and the Giraffe Centre. None of them includes the KWS park fee, the orphanage entry or the Giraffe Centre entry in the listed price. The table shows the catalog price, whether the vehicle is shared or private, and what you pay extra for each stop.

How the Day is Sequenced

The order works because of the clock. The park gates open at 6:00 AM, so the tours run the game drive first, roughly 4 to 4.5 hours on the plains in the shared day or a morning drive in the private version. The Sheldrick public visit runs exactly 11:00 AM to 12:00 noon daily, built around the orphaned herd's milk feed and mud bath, and cannot be delayed for late arrivals.

After the nursery the tours break for lunch (at your own cost on the shared day) and finish at the Giraffe Centre, which is open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM every day. There you feed Rothschild's giraffes from the raised feeding platform, a full visit including the talk and nature walk taking about 1.5 to 2 hours.

The Sheldrick Rules to Check Before You Book

The nursery visit costs $20 per adult and $5 per child under 12, paid in cash on the day. The Trust books visitors only through its own office, booked by email in advance, and says it does not accept bookings made through Viator, GetYourGuide or Tripadvisor: only its own confirmation email, presented on arrival, is valid. You reach the nursery through the KWS Mbagathi Gate on Magadi Road, and the standard KWS park entry fee applies on top of the $20.

So before you pay for a combo tour, ask the operator exactly how it secures the Trust booking for your date. The Private Park and Orphanage Drive and the shared day both include the 11 AM slot in their itineraries,. The $20 is still yours to pay in cash on the day.

Evening, Night and Layover Drives

Not every visit is a dawn drive. Three listings cover the afternoon light, the park after dark with a ranger, and a six-hour stopover from the airport.

The Evening Drive and Sundowner

The Evening Game Drive and Sundowner picks up from Nairobi hotels between 1:00 and 2:00 PM, runs an afternoon game drive of about 3 hours and stops for a sundowner near Hyena Dam before returning at dusk. It costs $86 per person in a safari vehicle, with a private option available, and the KWS park fee of $80 per adult non-resident is paid on top. The listing carries a single 5-star review, so the track record is thin compared with the half-day drives.

Airport-area hotels, Ongata Rongai, Mlolongo and Syokimau are excluded from the pickup.

The Night Safari and the Closing Gates

The Night Safari with a KWS Ranger is a private 5-hour drive after dark in a vehicle with a spotlight, escorted by an armed KWS ranger. It costs $300 per person, and the KWS park fee plus a mandatory ranger fee of $60 per safari are paid separately on top. It is a new listing with no reviews yet, so book it knowing there is no review history to read.

Keep the opening hours in mind: KWS gates open at 6:00 AM and close at 6:00 PM unless you are staying overnight in the park, which is what makes an escorted after-dark product the exception rather than a standard drive.

The Airport Layover Drive and the ETA

The Airport Layover Park Tour collects you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on arrival, runs a 6-hour private day through the park with a stop at the Ivory Burning Site, and drops you back for your flight. It costs $95 per person and Viator adds $85 at checkout. The car and driver park fee is included, but your own KWS park entry is not, and note the KWS figures are $80 per adult and $40 per child for non-residents.

If you are leaving the airport, Kenya requires most foreign visitors to hold an eTA applied for online before travel: a transit eTA for a connecting flight costs $20 and the standard single-entry eTA costs $30.

What You Can See in Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park covers 117 square kilometers and holds four of the Big Five, so wildlife starts minutes from the city centre. Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) gazetted it in 1946 as Kenya's first national park.

Four of the Big Five, No Elephants

The park hosts more than 100 mammal species, and the Big Five are missing only elephants. KWS records more than 400 bird species, which is the primary authority's figure, and lists three resident lion prides named Kingfisher, Athi and Mokoyet. KWS lists a rhino sanctuary among the park's attractions, and it does not publish the current rhino count.

Lion and rhino sightings are never guaranteed on a game drive, so treat any promise of a named animal as marketing. A shared half-day drive such as the Half-Day Game Drive gives you about four hours on the plains, while a private option like the Private Half Day, All Fees In targets the black rhino across about five hours.

The Open South Side and the Migration

Electric fencing runs along the park's northern, eastern and western boundaries, but the southern boundary on the Mbagathi River is not fenced. That open edge lets wildlife move between the park and the surrounding plains.

Wildebeest and zebra disperse out of the park into those plains in the wet season and return in the dry season, making the park the northern limit of this dry-season migration corridor.

Landmarks at the Main Gate

The Ivory Burning Site marks where Kenya's then-President Daniel arap Moi burned twelve tons of confiscated ivory in 1989, a turning point in the country's anti-poaching stance. Some tours stop here, including the 5-Hour 4x4 Safari.

At the Main Gate you also find the Nairobi Safari Walk, a raised boardwalk through wetland, savannah and forest habitats, and the Nairobi Animal Orphanage, which rehabilitates orphaned and injured wildlife. Each costs $25 per non-resident adult, or the Nairobi Package at $105 per non-resident adult combines the park, the orphanage and the walk.

Plan Your Trip

What the KWS Park Fee Adds to Each Tour

The tour price and the price of the day are not the same thing. Kenya Wildlife Service charges its own entry fee at the gate, and the listings handle it three different ways.

The KWS Fee by Visitor Category

Kenya Wildlife Service sets entry fees by residency, not by tour. A non-resident adult pays $80 and a child $40. African citizens pay $40 and $20.

Kenya residents pay in shillings at KES 1,350 for an adult and KES 675 for a child, and East Africa citizens pay KES 1,000 and KES 500. KWS defines a child as aged five up to under 18, and children five and under enter free. The figures come from the KWS conservation fee schedule and the park's own rate card.

VisitorAdultChild
Non-resident$80 (USD 80)$40 (USD 40)
African citizen$40 (USD 40)$20 (USD 20)
Kenya residentKES 1,350KES 675
East Africa citizenKES 1,000KES 500

Which Listings Include the Fee

The park fee sits inside the price on just the fee-included private listings: Private Land Cruiser, Fee Included at $257 for five hours and Private Half Day, All Fees In at $194.81. What you see is what you pay. Several Viator tours instead add the fee at checkout: Private Park, Elephants and Giraffes and Private Half-Day Jeep Tour add $80, Park, Giraffes and Sheldrick Half Day adds $115 and Airport Layover Park Tour adds $85.

The GetYourGuide listings leave the $80 fee to you, bought online before the drive. On the layover tour the car and driver park fee is covered, your own entry is not.

How to Pay

Independent visitors pay the park fee themselves through the KWSPay portal at kwspay.ecitizen.go.ke, which takes M-Pesa, Visa card or a direct bank transfer through Kenya Commercial Bank, ABSA or Equity Bank. Children aged five and under enter free. There is also a daily motor vehicle fee by seating capacity, KES 600 for a vehicle under 6 seats, KES 1,500 for 6-12 seats and up to KES 5,000 for 45 seats and above, which on a tour is the operator's cost, not yours.

The Three Payments of a Full Day

A day that adds the elephants and the giraffes means three separate payments, each paid differently. The KWS park fee goes through KWSPay online before or at the gate. The Sheldrick elephant orphanage charges $20 per adult and $5 per child under 12, payable in cash on the day, and the public hour runs 11am to 12 noon.

The Trust books visitors only through its own office and says it does not accept bookings made through Viator, GetYourGuide or Tripadvisor, so check how your operator secures the slot. The Giraffe Centre is the opposite of Sheldrick: it takes M-Pesa, Visa or Mastercard only, no cash, at KSh 1,500 (about $15) for a non-resident adult. Bring cash and a card, you will need both.

Gates, Hours and Getting There

The park sits about 8 km from the Nairobi CBD and three gates handle most visits. Gates open at 6:00 AM and close at 6:00 PM.

The Three Gates

Most bookable tours use the Main Gate on Lang'ata Road, which also serves the Safari Walk, the Animal Orphanage and KWS's Kifaru Ark shop for maps and souvenirs. East Gate sits on Nairobi Park East Gate Road in the South C area. The Mbagathi Gate on Magadi Road, also called the Workshop Gate, is the access point for the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant nursery, and reaching it still requires the standard KWS park entry fee.

The table below compares the three gates, where each sits and what a visitor uses it for, based on KWS and the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

GateWhereUsed for
Main GateLang'ata RoadPark entry, Safari Walk, Animal Orphanage, Kifaru Ark shop
East GateNairobi Park East Gate Road, South C areaPark entry
Mbagathi Gate (Workshop Gate)Magadi Road, LangataAccess to the Sheldrick elephant nursery

Hours, Distance and Self-Drive

Gates open at 6:00 AM and close at 6:00 PM unless you are staying overnight in the park. KWS's routing guidance puts the park about 8 km from the CBD, reached via Nyayo National Stadium and Lang'ata Road, while KWS's own intro text says 10 kilometers and Wikipedia about 7 km, so expect 7-10 km depending on your route. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Wilson Airport are the two airports KWS names for air access, which is why the Airport Layover Park Tour works off a JKIA pickup.

Self-driving is allowed. KWS charges a daily vehicle fee by seating capacity, from KES 600 for under 6 seats up to KES 5,000 for 45 seats and above, and enforces its park rules: a 40 km/h speed limit, staying on established roads and no off-road driving.

Reviews, ratings and counts are the platforms' own, shown as published for each listing. They are not reviews of this site.

Park Rules and What to Bring

KWS enforces a short list of rules in Nairobi National Park, and payment methods differ across the three stops of a combined day. Plan both before you go.

Do

  • Do pay the KWS park fee yourself through the KWSPay portal (kwspay.ecitizen.go.ke) before the day, because it accepts M-Pesa, Visa card and bank transfer and most listings leave the fee outside the price.
  • Do carry cash for the Sheldrick nursery, because the $20 adult entry is payable in cash on the day.
  • Do carry a card or M-Pesa for the Giraffe Centre, because admission of KSh 1,500 (about $15) is accepted only by M-Pesa, Visa or Mastercard and cash is not accepted.
  • Do bring water in a reusable bottle, binoculars, sunscreen and a layer for dawn drives, because KWS's own visitor tips list drinking water, binoculars and sunscreen and mornings in an open-roof vehicle are cool.
  • Do book the Sheldrick nursery in advance by email, because visits are limited to the 11am-12 noon window, same-day bookings are not accepted and only the Trust's own confirmation is valid.

Don't

  • Don't bring single-use plastic, because it is banned across all KWS parks, reserves and sanctuaries.
  • Don't feed any animal, because KWS prohibits feeding since it disrupts natural diets and creates human dependency.
  • Don't ask the driver to go off-road, because off-road driving is strictly prohibited and vehicles must stay on established roads and trails at up to 40 km/h.
  • Don't step out of the vehicle or approach wildlife, because visitors must stay in the vehicle with doors closed except at designated points and keep a minimum distance of 20 meters.
  • Don't fly a drone without a KCAA licence, because KWS requires one and charges non-residents $300 per drone per day per park.

Best Time for a Nairobi National Park Tour

KWS groups its parks into a high season with short grass and a low season with the long rains. Time of day matters as much as month, because the gates open at 6:00 AM.

Seasons

KWS's FAQ groups July to December and December to March as the high season for game viewing, citing short grass and sunny weather that make wildlife easier to spot. April to June is the low season because of the long rains, when some park tracks turn muddy and 4-wheel-drive vehicles may be needed. If you travel in those months, a 4x4 such as the 5-Hour 4x4 Safari is the safer pick over a van.

The table below summarizes the two windows using KWS's own season wording.

MonthsSeasonWhat it means
July to December and December to MarchHigh seasonShort grass and good sunny weather for easier wildlife spotting
April to JuneLow seasonThe long rains, with muddy tracks where a 4x4 may be needed

Time of Day

The gates open at 6:00 AM, and animals are most active before the heat of the day, so the morning drives dominate the catalog. Tours with hotel pickup start early, such as the Park, Elephants and Giraffes Shared Day, which collects guests between 5:20 and 6:00am precisely because a dawn game drive still leaves time for the 11am Sheldrick hour.

Afternoon options suit late arrivals, and the Evening Game Drive and Sundowner runs from a 1:00-2:00pm pickup to a sundowner stop near Hyena Dam before the 6:00 PM gate closing. If you want to combine the park with the elephant orphanage in one morning, start at dawn or you will miss the 11am-12 noon nursery window.

Nairobi National Park Tours: Questions

How much does it cost to tour Nairobi National Park?

Shared half-day game drives in the catalog start at $33 per person, and private tours run from $90 up to $300 for the night safari. On top of that sits the KWS park fee of $80 per non-resident adult and $40 per child, which only the fee-included private listings cover. See the comparison table for what each price covers.

Is Nairobi National Park worth visiting?

Yes, if you want four of the Big Five minutes from the city skyline. The park covers 117 square kilometers, holds more than 400 bird species and three resident lion prides, and was gazetted in 1946 as Kenya's first national park. Sightings are never guaranteed, so read what lives in the park before you set expectations.

Can I visit Nairobi National Park with my car?

Self-drive is allowed, and KWS charges a daily vehicle fee by seating capacity, from KES 600 for under 6 seats to KES 5,000 for 45 seats and above, alongside your own entry fee. You must follow the park rules: 40 km/h, no off-road driving and 20 meters from wildlife. The practical details are in gates, hours and getting there.

Are there elephants in Nairobi National Park?

No, elephants are the one member of the Big Five the park lacks, with more than 100 mammal species present. The elephants most visitors see are the orphans at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust nursery outside the game drive, visited on the 11am-12 noon public hour. Days that combine both stops are listed under park, elephants and giraffes tours.

Is the park fee included in the tour price?

Usually not. Only the Private Land Cruiser, Fee Included at $257 and the Private Half Day, All Fees In at $194.81, fold the $80 KWS fee into the sticker price. Most others add it at checkout or expect you to pay it on the day.

Can I see the park, the elephant orphanage and the Giraffe Centre in one day?

Yes, because the gates open at 6:00 AM and the Sheldrick public hour runs 11am-12 noon, so an early game drive still reaches the nursery in time, with the Giraffe Centre after lunch. The shared Park, Elephants and Giraffes Shared Day does exactly that in about 8 hours. Expect the $20 orphanage fee and the $15 Giraffe Centre fee on top.

Can I do a Nairobi National Park tour on a layover?

Yes. The Airport Layover Park Tour picks you up at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on arrival and returns you for your flight within a 6-hour day at $95 per person, with $85 added at checkout. It covers the car and driver park fee, but your own $80 entry is not included.

What is the best time of day for a game drive?

Morning, because the gates open at 6:00 AM and animals are most active before the heat builds. KWS calls July to March the high season thanks to short grass and sunny weather, while April to June brings muddy tracks where a 4x4 may be needed. The best time section compares morning, afternoon and evening options.

The pick for a first visit is the shared Park, Elephants and Giraffes Shared Day, a dawn game drive, the 11am baby-elephant hour and the Giraffe Centre in one day.
