Top 5 Kenyan National Parks to Take your Family this Christmas

Best Kenyan Parks for Family Safari The Christmas season is here with us again and once again we have to make plans to travel. You have been going to the cost year in year out and now you feel like you and the kids would want a different experience. And you are thinking I can take them to a lodge in afew national parks. But which ones do we go to?

The choice is easy since some parks are far more popular than others while still some offer a completely different experience from others. For example Masai mara animals and landscapes are way different from the animals and terrain in northern parks including Samburu, buffalo springs and Shaba parks. So how do you make the choice? You need to know what you are looking for and then decide based on what you want to experience.

1. Masai Mara Game Reserve – The Ultimate Big Five Destination

Masai mara Game reserve male Lions

Masai mara game reserve is the best place to see the big five animals. I know by now you are wondering which are these big five animals.. well these are Lions, Leopards, Buffalos, Elephants and the Rhinos. Its only in the masai mara that all these can be seen in a day or two in the park. Masai mara is a 1,510 sqkm area which is called home to more than 3 million animals. It’s the only park that you will see tens of big cats in a single day. It’s not unusual to see atleast 30 lions in 1 single day in masai mara.

Masai mara also offered the best views for game driving since the park has gently undulating plains with few or no trees to obstruct your view. You can see a herd of elephants from miles away and drive there for a closer look. Of course Masai mara is also known for the great wildebeest migration...which unfortunately is now off season as it takes place from July to October every year. You may want to book for the next season in august when your kids are on school holiday!

Masai mara has very many places to stay depending on your budget. For those that are looking for luxury lodges you can consider Serena mara, Keekorok lodge, Simba lodge, sopa lodge mara, Sarova mara lodge, governors’ camp, cottars camp among many others. The mid range Masai mara accommodation include Sentrim camp, AA camp among others. If you don’t want to break the bank, you can consider the very low priced camps mainly located just next to the main gates including flamingo camp, enchoro wildlife camp, mara sidai camp, mara manyatta camp among others. 2. Samburu Game Reserve – Of Blue Mountains, Equator and Unique Wildlife

Samburu game reserve is located in the northern Kenya tourism circuit including the Shaba national park and buffalo springs. All these parks are located to the north of the equator where the wildlife tends to grow bigger and the landscape becomes very dramatic and awesome. Your kids will love Samburu due to its out of the beaten track feel and the easier game drive always by the river.

samburu and shaba national parks

Samburu is located some ….. km north of Nairobi and you will pass by Mt Kenya where the kids can stop and take photos of the Mountain peaks. The park is host to many animals including the gerenuk or giraffe antelope, the Grevy zebra, the Somali ostrich, the Beisa oryx and many other animals unique to this region.

The park is also popular for the blue-mountains beyond and the Ewaso Nyiro River with its green vegetation that seems to snake its way through the dry and arid park vegetation. The game drives are always by the river at popular animal drinking points where you can even watch a big cat ambush or a crocodile attack on an unsuspecting antelope.

The river also cuts deep gorges and forms dramatic rock formations inside the Shaba National Park and you can also watch the birds and elephants as they drink water and wallow in the mud. The kids will love to see the jumbos with their kids at very close range of less than 20m.

Places to stay in Samburu include the Samburu lodge, AA camp, Sarova Shaba among others. There is not as much selection of lodges and camps in Samburu especially on the low cost segment so you may want to stay in Samburu lodge or the buffalo springs lodge. 3. Amboseli National Park – Viewing Africa’s highest Mountain and Lost of Elephants

Amboseli National Park Kenya 1440x1080Amboseli is the second most popular park in Kenya and is located some 232km from Nairobi along the Kenya Tanzanian border and just below the shadow of Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa at 5895m asl.

This park is mainly popular for the views it offers of Mt Kilimanjaro peak Kibo with its snow covered bald top. The mountain is mostly clear at dawn and later in the evening. A two or three day stay in Amboseli will ensure that you see the mountain peak which at times can be quite shy. Amboseli can be combined in a 5 day safari of Masai Mara- Lake Nakuru and Amboseli through Nairobi. Find an itinerary for Amboseli National Park Day Tour -Kilimanjaro Viewing Trip

4. Lake Nakuru National Park – Flamingos, rhinos and lots of buffalo

The Nakuru national park is also a great place to go with kids and enjoy a 1 night there with 2 game drives. The Nakuru park is usually arranged as a mid point from Masai mara to Samburu or to Amboseli national parks. The park is a 177sqkm area with a beautiful rift valley lake and a beautiful acacia forest, rocky cliffs and grasslands.

Some of the animals to see here include the endangered rhino, the endangered Rothschild giraffe, tree climbing lions, buffalos, cheetahs, leopards and many others. There however no lions in lake Nakuru national park due to its small size and the fact that it’s a completely fenced in park.

You can spend a night at the beautiful camping sites at the main gate or at the Makalia waterfalls or stay in the luxurious Sarova lion hill, Sopa lodge or KWS bandas. Go on a 2 Days Nakuru Tours Safaris this week.

5. Tsavo East and West National Parks – The home of Red Elephants

Tsavo east national park is located near Voi and is a large park that straddles the dry and patched landscape that is cut across by river Galana. The park is famous for the man-eaters of Tsavo where over 400 railway builders were killed by 2 female lions in the 1800s. The park is vast and is home to a large population of red elephants who get their colour from the iron ore rich red soils of the park.

The Tsavo west national park on the other hand is a forested park with very unique and dramatic hills and valleys. The park is rich in green flora and rivers that cut across it. Tsavo west national park is home to Ngulia rhino sanctuary where they have fenced in the rhino population from poaching.

Tsavo west is full of picturesque sites including the Shetani lava flows, the Mzima springs with an underground observatory, the caves, Ngulia hill and much more. It’s definitely a park worth exploring with your kids this Christmas season as you enjoy viewing wildlife from the many parks in Kenya.

The advantage of the Tsavo parks is that they are close to Mombasa and Diani and you can actually combine a beach R & R with a 2-3 day bush trip from the coast to Tsavo and even Amboseli and back down again to the coast. Find out about the Best Nairobi Big Five Day Tours Safaris Packages.
